I use Fels Naptha in my home made laundry detergent am very pleased with the results. Dirty, soiled work clothes come out clean every time. I even use it on my shop towels to save money. For the shop towels, I mix a cup of borax with about a quarter stick of Fels Naptha. Gets the oil and grease out every time. Just be sure to grate the bar up well.

Tried everything under the sun to remove the tough perspiration stains from my sons football jersey and workout shirts. Then I remembered what my grandmother and my great-grandmother used... Fels-Naptha!!! Stains are all gone and the smell is too!!

Excellent! This bar of soap is legendary in the Softball community. My daughter is on a travel softball team and the uniforms have to be perfect. My daughter slides in clay, dirt, and grass, and the only product I can count on is the Fels-Naptha bar.

It will keep you from getting poison ivy or oak.
My family always kept a bar of Fels-Naptha around the house for when we worked in the woods. My father swears if you wash your hands (or other parts of the body that cam in contact) with it as soon as you get in the house, it will keep you from getting poison ivy or oak.

Chocolate ice cream on a white dress..
My daughter was wearing a white dress when eating chocolate custard (ice cream)..by the time we got home, I was tired & didn't want to go to the basement to treat the stain. I left it sit overnight before getting around to the stain. I wet the stain & worked Fels Naptha into the stain, let it set a bit before washing. Before throwing the load into the dryer, I made sure to look at the dress. I was amazed that none of the chocolate stain was left! Besides treating stains, I also use this bar for the base of my homemade laundry soap/detergent.

i have tried every stain remover on the market, this is the first one that actually works. I have a four year old, she is a stain attracter. The playground at her preschool is covered with shredded tires, daily she comes home covered in a black oily stain. I tried Fels-Naptha and figured it wouldn't work. I was immediately suprised. Even clothes that had set in stains were cleaned. I was in disbelief. I have told everyone about this awesome product.

I had never heard of Fels-Naptha and was looking for a stain remover. I read the wrapper and decided to try it. It's amazing and my go to stain remover. I now use it to clean paint brushes as well. Works great for chalk paint, including getting the paint out I splattered on my clothes.

If you have tried your usual stain remover and it hasn't removed the stain try fels naptha...oil, grease from cooking, perspiration , lipstick, food spills, i have tried it on all of these and it usually gets them out.

Our son just started travel soccer and just played his second game in rain and in a field of mud. His all white (shirt, shorts, and socks) uniform was destroyed. Knowing another mom whose son was in travel baseball I knew she would have to keep his uniform clean I asked her what product does she use. I had never heard of this so I was skeptical. I am now a believer in your product now and have passed this on to other moms with soccer season just kicking off. For $2 this is definitely a product that should be promoted at youth sports events and shared amongst other moms. Why is this not advertised?

I've been making my own laundry detergent for 7 years, using the Fels Naptha bar. The last bars that I bought looked different right out of the wrapper and the laundry soap wound up looking more like egg drop soup than laundry soap. VERY disappointed. Will buy one more time, and if I get the same results , will stop buying the product. Seems that the change came when the Purex name went on the label. Not happy with this at all. Change it back please!

Stain was completely gone
My mom spilled chocolate Boost down the front of her robe and ore than a week later asked me to wash it. I doubted I could get it all out but I treated it with a wet bar of Fels Naptha and worked it into the stain. I let it sit for about a 1/2 hour and then washed it with my regular detergent. I was amazed that the stain was completely gone! My mom and I thank you for a fantastic product and I highly recommend it!

Name Confusing - Great Product
I have no idea WHY they call it 'naptha' since it is NOT naptha (moth balls - Petroleum based with awful smell) but I LOVE the product. I use Fels Naptha in my laundry soap (Fels Naptha, Washing Soda, Borax, essential oil for fragrance) and have been doing my laundry with it for a couple of years, now. Will never go back to commercial laundry detergent! Saves a bunch of money and gets my laundry clean. I KNOW what is in my laundry soap, and I control what and how much scent. Perfect!

YUCK!! Another useful product ruined by marketing decisions
The overpowering and nauseating fragrance added to what used to be a reliably useful product is intolerable. I always have kept a bar of Fels-Naptha soap by the kitchen sink to clean greasy hands and remove poison ivy oils before they could cause a rash. But when I opened a new bar today my eyes watered and I got a headache from the overwhelming "fragrance" (stench). I finally had to put it outside. I won't be buying it again EVER unless they eliminate the totally unnecessary fragrance.

My daughter plays elite softball and the team wears white pants. She gets not only gets infield dirt ground in but grass stains too. I almost gave up on a pair of pants and threw them away. One of the other moms told me about fels naptha and now the pants are as white as the day we bought them. My son plays rugbe, his white socks are never white after a match, but thet are after using fels naptha on them. Hands down best stain remover I've ever used.

We used to use this all the time as children in the country-especially if we had been playing near poison ivy--I live on an island that has many rats--noticed that the bar of soap that is on the outdoor sink-is gnawed on all 4 sides--am hoping there is something poison in it, to rats...but worry about our eagles and other raptors being hurt by ingesting a soap eating rat..this sounds ridiculous, but there are very strict environmental rules here...

Try it, It works wonders!
The smell is not a problem for me because it does not linger on the fabric. It works wonders on stains!. My husband had a day old ink stain on a cotton fabric, gone! In one minute LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. His collar dress shirts are always a problem to get clean this did the trick an it's fast, I just don't know why it took me so long to try it. The price for a bar is good too.

I have used this for my laundry steadily for the past 3.5 years.... Something has changed. The smell is different, (loved the original scent), and the consistency is different. It seemed softer this time when I cut it to grate it. Not sure if cleaning property has changed, but will certainly be able to tell, as my. Husband does yard work, and I have never had a problem before. Will update later once I find out. Boy, the smell has become over powering . Whew!

PLEASE DON'T STOP MAKING THIS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My husband got new uniforms at his job. So, the first thing he says to me is he wants his pants starched from now on. He wants them heavily starched. So, I bought the other spray starches and I can use a whole can on just his four pair of work pants that he got. And then the process starts all over again, when I wash his pants on the fourth day and iron them. I remembered seeing this bottle of starch on the bottom shelf, so I bought it. Not only does a whole bottle of this starch last me a long time because I make batches of mixed solution of it, it doesn't flake as much on his black slacks. Of course, I spray the starch and iron first on the inside out of his pants and then iron again on the right side of his pants, and his pants look crisp and professional. He always gets compliments about his appearance being that of a business man instead of a delievery man. Makes me feel proud that he looks so good.

I have decided to give up on all the 'modern' laundry aids, so I went and bought a new bar of Fels Naptha to put on my laundry shelf.
Didn't even get away from the store before I traced the smell in my bag to the new soap.
Is the old reliable product still available, or do I have to learn to make my own?

Another use for Fels-Naptha
Years ago I had a large boil on the back of my leg. I showed my grandmother and she made a drawing sab by using Fels-Naptha. Scrap off soap to make a dust, add a pinch of sugar and just enough water to make a paste. Apply to boil and cover with loose bandage. When my Grandmother did this I woke the next morning and found that the boils core had been drawn out. I have a case of the original non-scent and will not part with it.

Fels-Naptha Bar is My Multi-Purpose Cleanser
I happened upon Fels-Naptha bar while shopping one day, read the package and took a bar home. I am an artist and was looking for an inexpensive cleaner for my brushes and work area. I was pleasantly surprised that it work very well for both purposes. So, I graduated up to trying Fels-Naptha as its intended laundry use and found it worked better than most other, more expensive laundry aids and keep several bars on hand now. I am a big fan now and would recommend Fels-Naptha to other artists and 'keepers of the laundry' anytime. Thanks Purex!

I strongly recommend this product.
I highly recommend this product to friends and newcomers to football. My son has played football since second grade and is now in the eighth grade. I have never understood why you put boys in white pants to play football or baseball but this has sure been a lifesaver in keeping their pants white. I do agree with others that the scent is a little strong it does choke me up but I will keep using it.

I use Fels-Naptha to make my own laundry detergent. Works great! Then, I discovered that the soap stops the spread of Poison Ivy oil, so I have anyone who has been exposed wash with the soap. It works great! We keep a bar out at our cabin all summer long. When we're done, I grate it, put in some washing powder, borax and water and use it for laundry all year long!

I prefer to use this product, because it does a good job.
Now that I decided to look up the ingredients, I will no longer use this soap. I figured all along that it wasnt very good for me, the smell is the worst! The impact of exposure to triclosan on our skin (from soap and body wash) and in our mouths (from toothpaste and mouthwash) is not fully understood, but triclosan has been shown to interfere with hormone functioning in lab animals. As a result, scientists recognize that it may also affect human liver, blood, and reproductive systems. When will you company's stop shoving chemicals down our throats?

As a member of a MCL color guard and funeral detail, I found this product takes away the ring around the collar stain on my white shirt quite nicely. I hand wash my white shirts. On a personal level it does take out that dingy cast color from light colored kahki clothing.

New packaging 1/2 oz less soap
I have been using Fels Naptha Soap to make my own laundry detergent for years. I would prefer a fragrance free version. I love this soap, but I gave it 1 star because of the fragrance, and because you have shrunk the size, but not the price. I had a bar of soap I forgot about in the cabinet & asked my husband to pick up a bar so I could make soap. After grating the soap, I went to retreive my other two ingredients (super washing soda & borax). I found the forgotten bar. The old bar was 5 1/2 oz, and the new bars are 5 oz. I only noticed because the packaging was different & Purex was more predominant on the front. Also, I noticed Purex removed the ingredient list, and asked comsumers refer to the website for ingredient list. Very disappointing.

I was using spray starch on my scrubs when I discovered that overspray was building up on the floor where I iron. I began turning back the cycle on my washing machine and adding 2 - 3 cups of sta-flo to the clean wet scrubs. Add a little water and agitate, and spin it about three quarters out. If you iron when they are still just damp, the iron flies. It is so fast and easy. I feel like my patients are comforted and reassured, knowing I've taken the time to present a professional appearance.

Yes, I will purchase this item again.
I had never heard of this product until I sent an E-mail to the folks at flexi lead. They manufacturer the retractable leashes for dogs.
Any time we would walk our dogs, if any moisture got on them or they got wet from rain, a few days later you could smell the most awful smell on the leash when it was pulled out. The smell was way worse than mold. So I wrote to flexi lead to ask about a solution as these leashes are pretty expensive and they recommended your soap.
The first time we tried it I was a little skeptical but it worked like a charm. It took that awful smell right out. After reading your reviews I'm definitely going to try it on my laundry.

I have been trying to get away from chemicals, fragrances and toxins for a year. Steadily changing one product at a time, I have been making my own laundry detergent for almost a year. With 3 adults and 5 kids, we go through a lot of laundry detergent. I just made a new batch and almost couldn't finish it because the fragrance was so heavy. Then I noticed that the ingredients were not listed but referred me to the website. From the list on your website, it would appear to be anyone's guess as to what is in your soap now.
Been using your product off and on for 50 years, but will look for something else now. The ingredients and fragrance defeat my purpose for its use.

I used to think this soap smelled so good. I could't stop smelling it when I used it for poison ivy. My sister had given it to me to try and I hadn't bought any myself. Never used it on laundry but was reading all the great reviews on how well it cleans so I decided to try it. Went out and bought some, what a disappointment with the smell when I opened it. Will not buy it again unless it goes back to the old scent. It makes me cough. From all the reviews I read I think most people agree the old scent is better. What was the reason for the change when people were so satisfied with it the way it was? SOMETIMES THINGS CAN'T BE MADE BETTER THEY'RE GOOD JUST THE WAY THEY ARE !!!!!

Hey Purex! Ditch the fragrance! We want fragrance-free!
Purex, you need to IMMEDIATELY get the fragrance and artificial color out of Fels-Naptha! Shall I call, email and write to your CEO and top executives to make this happen? Fels-Naptha was recently featured in at least one popular blog about natural cleaning products. I rushed out to get it, along with washing soda, borax, and whatever else the blog advised me to purchase. Much to my dismay, I discovered I can't use this Fels-Naptha bar because it has fragrance and artificial color. My husband has a skin condition (dishydrotic eczema) and can't use anything that contains fragrances, dyes, or toxic chemicals. Seriously, he starts itching like crazy and his skin breaks out in blisters. It really sucks! I've been washing his clothes in organic pure unscented Castile soap from the Vermont Soap company, and while this is 100% non-itchifying, it requires me to pre-treat stains so vigorously I've developed muscular forearms.
Purex, you have a brand-new target audience/market for your Fels-Naptha bar: Everyone who is seeking a chemical-free healthy lifestyle! Last time I checked, that includes virtually everyone in the $75K+ demographic, the college-educated demographic, the "Good Moms" demographic, the "Great Dads" demographic, the "Health Savvy" demographic, and the "Healthy Planet" demographic. It even reaches across product lines to the "off-the-grid" demographic, which includes a few Duck Dynasty viewers (the ones who do laundry occasionally). With this much popularity, if Fels-Naptha decided to run for President ... .
Hey, Purex! At a time when corporations are salivating over these potential customers, spending gazillions of dollars on focus groups and highly-paid branding consultants, you're oblivious to the treasure you're sitting on: A genuine vintage American laundry product, predating the "super-scary consumer product chemical age" and ripe for rediscovery. Please ditch the fragrance!

Ingredients not on package, not fragrance free
I bought this product to make my own laundry detergent, not realizing that it is fragranced. I am extremely disappointed because I started sneezing as soon as I opened it. I won't be able to use it as I am extremely sensitive to fragrance.

I don't know what the big deal is over the fragrance. I grew up with this stuff. My mom used it on my brothers and me whenever we got into the poison oak. It had an odd yet distinctive fragrance then. I didn't even know they still made this stuff and just recently stumbled across it. I have to say that I much prefer the new fragrance. I can barely smell it at all, whereas the stuff I used back in the 60s had an order you just had to put up with. Bravo, Purex, for improving the fragrance.

Purex ruined a classic product!
Fels-Naphtha was a great cleaning product that was easy to grate and smelled like clean laundry. Now the product has an unpleasant oily texture and smells awful and overpowering. WHY?

Use it faithfully in my laundry detergent. Really wish you would ditch the fragrance and dyes. If I want fragrance I would prefer to select my essential oils to match the mood I'm in. Please make it unscented and dye free

Mom used the original back in the 50's to make an old fashion drawing save. That is what I bought it for ! This is completely different ! I won't be able to use it. I do not want artificial smells or dyes. If you must have a "New improved" bar please make the original as well. Guess it is my fault. I bought the "Name" with out checking the web site.

Why the new overwhelming fragrance?
I have used Fels Naptha for years with great success. I went recently to buy a new bar and found new packaging, a smaller bar AND a very strong fragrance. Since my daughter is allergic to most fragrances, I am hoping you still make a fragrance free bar. Or do you still have some of the older product in stock? I'm not sure how I will organize wash days without Fels Naptha. Distressed Loyal Customer

I will try the fels-Naptha for the first time today, since childhood. Like many of the other reviews, I was very very disappointed that the fragrance was not as I originally remember. Actually the color is different also. It use to be more brownish or tannish. Now it is golden. Please return to the original formula. I gave the product two stars two because I believe the reviews that stated that it stills works very well. I will go and try it today on my own laundry. however, I am very sensitive to artificial fragrances and I will probablly not buy it again untill you offer the original version as well.

Searched on line for the Colgate laundry bar and found one store in my area. They stopped carrying it. As last resort went to the big W - - - and found they did not carry it. Instead they stocked Fels-Naptha. Years ago had used it, thinking it was the same. Not finding the ingredient on the cover, bought 3 bars to save a 30 minute trip. Even told the checkout lady it was a simple basic soap without all of the unnecessary colors and smells. The other laundry bar has none of these things. Will order the Octagon bar on line and pay shipping. Then throw these bars in the garbage. I like the exceptional rinse from the Big "O" when it is used as a bath soap. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeese offer the original "no fragrance, no added color" to Fels-Naptha.

I purposely bought this soap because I was told it did not have perfume. Well low and behold it does and it is real bad. When something gives you migraines and you try to get away from it it rears its ugly head again. Why do all the cleaning products have scents? I don't understand. Into the garbage it goes.

Can't live without Fels-Naptha laundry bar
My son plays baseball all over the country and Fels-Naptha keeps his white pants looking new no matter how many times he slides! The dirt and grass stains are no match for Fels -Naptha! And the best part is it doesn't take a lot of time or elbow grease to get the tough stains out!

I was so disappointed when I opened my recently purchased bar of Fels and noted the strong perfume. Please remove this as it causes allergic reactions for many family members. Going over the ingredient list, I'm sure there have been changes to the original recipe and I would say not for the better. Please go back to the Fels-Naptha that we are used to!! I would only recommend this product if I had a choice to purchase the original.

Horrors, what has happened to the Fels Naptha Bar Soap!
I have used the Fels Naptha Bar for years and I opened a newly purchased bar and the color was bright orange and the texture was soft. The original bar was hard milled and I would grate it for an addition to my wash load...the new bar is soft and the grater turns out curls and not finely grated particles. That is not all....the smell is not an odor that represents clean laundry aired on a line during a sunny day...it smells like cheap perfume.
The changes to this "old faithful" are a shame. Ordinarily I would rate the item with 5 stars. Sorry.
Please return to the original old faithful bar..
Thanks

Chemically Sensitive - NIX the horrible scent!
The rating I give this current product is a -5 due to toxic chemicals in the overpowering scent.
I haven't had my own home for 16 yrs... recently moved into my own place and last night purchased a bar of Fels Naptha for stains etc. When I took it out of the grocery bag, I was "knocked over" with and incredibly horrible toxic chemical cloud!! I had to put it outside immediately! WHAT did you do with the Fells Naptha I used to use??? Unless it's changed back, I won't be able to use it because of chemical sensitivities that I live with...
In case you aren't aware, the number of folks with allergies and chemical sensitivities is astromical now because "everyone" fills their products with SO MUCH toxic chemical perfume... people who use them have become a walking "toxic cloud" due to the scents in their laundry soap, dryer sheets, deodorant, hair products and perfume and cologne etc. If I come within 6' of someone in the parking lot or store with this "toxic cloud" engulfing them, I have to move farther away or put on a charcoal lined face mask.
Your product DOES N.O.T. NEED TOXIC CHEMICALS TO DO IT'S JOB!!
There is NOT one person on this planet who is deficient in toxic chemicals, PLEASE take them out, please!!!

I use this to get stains out of everything. My kids from blowout diapers to spilling pretty much everything. It gets permanent marker out. It's saved me so much money! I tell everybody about this miracle bar. It's amazed a lot of people I've given it to. It's worked better than a lot of other products I've used. Even for my carpet stains!

It ain't what Mom used to use!
Fels Naptha was always Mom's "go to" for tough stains. Mom and her friends would save their beef, pork, etc. fat all year and then make soap with just fat and LYE and it wasn't 1/4 as TOXIC as this product. Always love and miss you Mom!

I would still recommend this soap
I know the bar has changed, and it has far too much fragrance for me. But it still works on getting my laundry clean when I pretreat. I do wish that the company would make the fragrance lighter. The old formula was fine. Please go back too the old formula.
This is also good on bug bits, as well as laundry. You just wet the bar and make a paste out of it and you let it sit on the bit for jus t a few minutes and the itching will stop.

Cut the scent back at least by half!
Have used this as a pretreater, and have also used it as a laundry soap.. 1/4 to 1/3 cup of the grated soap in a top loading machine. New bar I just got..well scent is close to original, but WAY too much. Cut it down or cut it out. Long time user?
And advertise thus bar on T.V and in women's magazines! You sell more. Works great to get makeup off wash cloths ect

Don't like the new formula
I have used this product off and on for 20 years on the recommendation of my grandmother. I bought a new bar today and it is a completely different product. The smell is overpowering, The texture of the bar is crumbly. I sliced about an 8th of the bar with a knife like I usually do and it crumbled. I put it on a plate and my son thought it was cheddar cheese. The list ingredient list is very long and can't possibly be the same as my grandmother used. You have lost a customer. Please go back to the original formula.

Changing the formula turned a great product into one that is just fair. Grease does not break down as easily as before and the scent is hard to tolerate. Fels Naptha wasn't broken. You should have left it alone.

I used to use Fels Naptha when I would make my homemade laundry detergent as part of my attempt to decrease the amount of chemicals in my home. However, I have been recently disappointed with my latest purchase. The fragrance is way too strong. I thought so when I picked it up in the store, so I looked for the ingredients. They are not listed on the package. You have to visit the website for that information. That should have been my first clue that something was not right. When I got home, the strong scent did not dissipate like I'd hoped it would, and the color of the bars was not what I remembered. When I read the ingredients, I understood why they weren't printed on the label. I was very disappointed to find so many less-than-pure ingredients listed. Though I know and love the effectiveness of Fels Naptha, I must look for a suitable laundry soap that is less toxic. If you ever change the formula back to what it used to be, you will regain me as a customer. But until then, I can no longer use this product, and I will be retracting my endorsement of this product as well. Very disappointing!

I'm new to using Fels Naptha for making my own laundry soap but the smell is so intense and makes my lips tingle....not in a good way. The scent is WAY too strong. It smells like chemicals and I was using this as a more pure and natural way to launder clothing. The smell makes me think I'm pouring chemicals on my clothing. It is very unpleasant smelling. Please cut the scent bad.

I have been using Fels-Naptha for a very long time and have always loved it. But my last few purchases have really disappointed me there is no fragrance at all anymore I always really liked to way it smelled I don't think I will buy it anymore to be honest now it smell more like a mans hand cleaner and I know there has been changes to the soap. The color isn't even the same, I don't understand why companies with a great product have to change it for the worse.. I don't think I would recommend this anymore.

As a professional painter/finisher, I have used Fels Naptha to remove the paint thinner/solvent residue in my natural bristle brushes for many, many years. It rinses out completely and leaves the bristles soft and flexible for the next job. It is not as good now as it was years ago. I wish they would bring back the original formula.

I have been using Fels-Naptha all my life (my mom raised me on this stuff) but I am extremely disappointed in the "latest and greatest" version. I understand the re-branding nonsense that occurs when one company adsorbs another but I am so frustrated by the recipe changes they feel they must make as well, whether to turn a higher profit or to just change things up for the heck of it. This product is well and truly ruined with the horrible scent, dyes, and soft consistency. I have always taken a bar with me when travelling, especially internationally, so that I can wash my clothes while on the road. I was not pleased with the results of this latest purchase and sadly, will never use this product again as is. I truly hope someone reads these reviews, gets their head in the right place, and brings back the original, or at least the version before the re-branding process.

I am a newby to Fels-Naptha, literally just made up my own detergent last night. I expected the grating process to be more powdery and less like shredded cheese. I was extremely disappointed to have to look up the ingredients and on top of that to find talc as like the third ingredient.

This starch was used on piecing fabrics for a quilt. Overtime (2years) the quilt showed signs of yellowing on all of the light background pieces. When a drop of water got on the quilt it left a watermark. This is terrible to use on quilting fabrics that are light.

I still like this because it works
I've been using this for a few years now. I was looking for a stain remover that was not so expensive so I decided to try this. I've seen it in the stores for years but wanted the convenience of a spray. Well I am glad I tried it, it may get a little messy compared to just spraying a stain but it's worth the extra effort. When the stain is stubborn I just add some of my premixed diluted bleach to the stain and just watch it disappear for a few seconds then rinse out and laundry as usual.

Stealing from customers just like everyone else reducing sz.
I have been buying Fels-Naptha for years to make my own soap. Just like everyone else here, I've discovered that Purex is screwing everyone, just like all the other companies by sneaking 1/2 oz out thinking we won't notice. Even the pictured bar shows 5.5 oz..Shame on you. Also changing the formula was not a good thing. People pay attention. You've done a serious injustice to a wonderful, historical product.

I am gradually removing all toxic and chemical laden cleaning supplies from my home. I have heard about Fels-naptha from various people and decided to give it a try. I always read labels before purchasing anything- but your products does not list ingredients. After checking on your website concerning the ingredients I have decided to return it. Too many toxic ingredients- including talcum. Overally scented also. I was under the assumption this was a natural type product. Will continue my search for a safe natural stain remover.

HORRIBLE! Bring back the original!
I used this product for stain removal for close to 30 years. Had enough of a supply that until recently I didn't have to buy any for a number of years. What an unwelcome surprise. Not only does this version not work the way it used to, the so called fragrance is so overpowering it's a stench. It permeated multiple rooms despite being wrapped in multiple layers of plastic. Was making me ill - threw it out.

This will be the last time buying Fels-naptha soap. Years ago I used to use it to make my own laundry detergent. After deciding to make my own detergent again I looked at the label and was disappointed and inconvenienced that I had to go to the website to see the ingredient list. I bought it anyway, looked up the list and was disappointed again. Now as I am typing this I have an unwrapped bar in front of me and the smell is overwhelming. I guess now I won't be making my own detergent until I can find a different laundry bar. Unscented, no or less harsh chemicals, without unnecessary dye, and ingredients listed on the package.

I have severe allergies to scents/fragrances so I make my own laundry detergent with Borax, A & H washing powder and Fels Naptha because all don't have fragrances - at least not until now! Yesterday I was making a new batch with Fels Naptha I just bought. I was blown out of the water when I unwrapped it! Wow, sent me into a coughing spell right away. Plus, the texture is different- not solid like before. It's awful all the way around. Why put fragrance in it? Almost every other laundry soap out there has powerful scents and for us who can't tolerate them Fels Naptha has been there us. Went to look at the wrapping for the ingredients and they're not even listed. Is that even legal? What's going on? BAD IDEA TO CHANGE TO THIS NEW BAR! IF THERE WAS THE OPTION FOR NO STARS I WOULD CHOOSE THAT!

Just found FN at the hardware store. No Naptha; what the heck! Seems like old time products get bought up and the recipe changes and the product is diminished! Used to run around the fields and woods and then take a bath or shower when we got home to keep the poison ivy at bay. Purex, bring it back!!!! Put a warning on the package like the drug companies advertise their "death" side effects of their drugs on TV.

AWFUL AWFUL DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT
I had heard about this product for years so this past Sunday bought it to use on stains I can not get out on cotton shirts
I did not use it because when I opened it up it smelled like a bathroom at a gas station and diesel fuel
I will not put that on my clothes
Too bad I did not come and read comments first I would not have purchased it
Why is Purex not responding to any of these negative comments
Please be smart and do not buy this product it is disgusting just take a look at the list of ingredients which you have to go to the website to find
Shame on you Purex for ruining something that I understand was good
All these people can not be wrong

I used to love this product. And, no, I'm not so very old. Purex had a very well established, reliable product, so why the change in formula? I know why you don't list the ingredients on the package anymore: people use this believing they are getting the more natural cleaner that it has always been, but not many actually go to the website to find the ingredients list. They buy it believing in the product they have always used and trusted. What a shame?!

Loved old version...had to corrupt it with chemicals. Not for my family. Shame on you. Verified while shopping, just left at counter. Going back to lye soap.

Have bought this in the past for grass and grease stains in laundry and for poison ivy prevention. This new stuff smells terrible and left uncovered will smell up your whole house. Did not work that well on my laundry as it used to. Also you have to go to website to see what it is made of. Is that legal ? Won't buy again. PS; when I took the bar out of the factory sealed wrapper a big chunk was missing out of the bar.

Not the same old fashioned trusted bar of Fels Naptha. The last 2 bars I have bought have been thrown out due to the odor and I will never buy again. The new fragrance is overwhelming, makes my eyes burn, and permeates to other rooms through a closed door. The wrapper is off and the smell just keeps coming off the bar of soap, wet or dry. A fragrance this strong has to be toxic.

The smell is horrible. This is the first time I purchased but will be the last. Ingredients were not listed but I bought it anyway since I've always heard it's the best natural stain remover. Now that I've already made entire batch of laundrey soap with it, I read the ingredients and must throw all of it away
Waste of money, don't buy this, it smells awful and is full of questionable chemicals

Where did my FELS -NAPTHA soap Go?
What were you THINKING? I grew up with this soap, I am almost 60 yrs old my Gramma used it, my Mother used it, I still had a bar leftover in a jar, my Mother used. I recently started to make my own Laundry Detergent to save Money & go Natural. I used your Purex Free and Clear for about 8 yrs. I have developed a lot of sensitivities as I've gotten older. I was very excited to make up my own Detergent. I was able to grate the old bar with no Problem, I purchased a new package... Questioned when it said to go to the website for the ingredient list. When I opened the new Package, bar Color was different, the bar was soft, could not grate it to powder. Thought at first it was b.c. of original bar was dried up; then discovered the Wretched Smell!!! To late now! I had already made up 3 gallons of Powder Soap. I literally became Ill, I even wore a mask to sir it all up & it BROKE MY MINI CHOPPER!!!!! If I would have known that Your Company Changed this Wonderful Product and Turned it into a Cesspool of CHEMICALS I would have NEVER BOUGHT IT!!!!!! You have Just "LOST A LOYAL CUSTOMER", I will Make Sure to Let Every One I Know NEVER TO BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!

Do not buy into misleading marketing
Like many others, I too fell victim to the misleading product marketing. The odor prohibits me from even handling this, let alone using it in my laundry. Awful. And the ingredients are NOT environmentally friendly (various dyes, fragrance additives and derivatives of Palm Oil - one of the worst oils to use as massive forests and wildlife are destroyed in the process acquiring it). Never again will I consider buying another PUREX product.

Listen to your customers!
I bought a bar based on a relative's recommendation to clean stains on a cotton crocheted antique coverlet. I can't afford to choose the wrong cleanser as an ancestor made this beautiful item nearly 100 years ago.
HOWEVER, after reading similar reviews, I'm concerned about this product. It is waxy yellowish-orange, and the "fragrance" is hideous. One person referred to it as cheap perfume. I'd say that and add rotting orange peels. Disgusting!
Why can't it simply be a fresh, clean fragrance....or better yet, none at all?
As the saying goes, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it!'

I would not buy this soap again
I used this before on stains, but now the smell is so horribly storing that I can't stay in the same room with it with the wrapper still on.

Wouldn't be without my Fels Naptha soap.
I have been making laundry detergent with FelsNaptha for years and I love the way it cleans my clothes. Yes, the fragrance has changed since 60 years ago, but it is not that bad and the size of the bar maybe smaller but so is anything else you buy. You can't compare the price with over the counter detergents, they are horrendous in price, plus all the plastics jugs you keep out of the environment.

Purchased this for the first time
I bought this to help clean some shirt collars. I'm not a tree hugger so the product does not have an offensive smell at all. Can't comment on what the older version was like in comparison. But again its not like you open the package and need to reach for a breather mask. But that said everyone is different and so are smell tolerances. Product worked as advertised on my collar stains.

Loved the old version but recenlty picked up a bar and was extrmely disappointed as soon as i got home. The smell was strong and smelled of chemicals or something artificial. Tried it on a separate dirt and oil stain just to see how well it worked. The dirt stain was still there but it was faded, the oil stain looked like it had little to no change. Very upset with purex for not only changing the ingredients, but actually making you go online to see the ingrediants is not cool. I still use purex laundry detergant but I'll be checking every bottle i buy to see if they change that too.

I have used this product in the past, like many others, to make my own laundry soap. I found that the home made stuff did not clean my children's clothes very well, I spent a lot of time handwashing. I recently purchased another bar to pretreat stains. The smell is much like that of the cheap hand soap in a public restroom but it doesn't make my eyes water or leech through my home like some reviewers claim. I am disappointed that it is no longer a natural product and that it has a gooey texture when wet. It does lather well when hand washing items but I have noticed if I follow the package directions and just rub the stain then throw the item in the wash the soap is still on the item at the end of the wash cycle. Frustrating.

Naptha soap was used by my Mom to keep the ticks off us as a kid, so I remember it always had a distinct strong smell. Of course they can't use a couple cleaning agents to save our environment, but that's been twenty plus years. I don't make my own soap, but I add borax with tide and when I get a stain a toothbrush and naptha soap works for me. I still use it to repel chiggers and ticks as well. If the bar is smaller it followed suit with everything else I didn't notice shrank as the price went up. I did want to know what was in it as for why I ended up writing this, purex is junk not the naptha soap.

Why did you change up this previously wonderful product?
Purchased the bar soap for many years for laundry and washing up hands after yardwork to prevent poison ivy reactions,as my Grandmother always did. It worked great! This new formula bar smells awful and I'm concerned since it is such an oily bar,I'm questioning if it will work to prevent poison ivy or spread it!!! Why did you change something that was perfect for forever???!! I'm VERY disappointed!

What happen to the old formula??!!!
I have used this product for decades to remove the oil of poison ivy. But the new formula with glycerin and fragrances no longer removes the poison ivy oil. I found this out the hard way. My old bar ran out and I had to purchase a new one. When I used it immediately to wash my whole body after pulling poison ivy up in my yard, it didn't remove the poison ivy oil. Consequentially I now have poison ivy all over my arms and legs. Also because I didn't realize I still had the poison ivy oil on me, I spread it to my clothes and sheets. Now I also have poison ivy on other parts of my body. PLEASE GO BACK TO THE OLD FORMULA!!!!!!!!!!!
The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because most people don't read 1 star reviews

This is no longer the same product that has been used in my household for a millennium. The bar is now orange, smaller and doesn't smell the same. I used it to try and get a stain out of a pillow case and there was no difference after the wash. I assume they have changed ingredients entirely.

Why Change and Ruine a Great Product?
I have been using Fels Naptha laundry bar for many years and it has been a great product. But now the ingredients has been changed and it does NOT work the same. PLEASE go back to the original formula! I used to recommend this product a lot, but not anymore unless I find out that Purex has listed to its customers and changed the ingredients back to the original.

I have no doubt the ingredients have changed over these many decades. As a you g teenager,my landlady would buy these bars by the case.I would sit at the kitchen table cutting the bars in half leaving them in their paper wrappers.I would stand them up on the shelf leading to the cellar...to dry and harden.Doing this makes the bar last longer.60+ years later I'm still using it and expanding my uses for it.

I used to make my own laundry detergent with Fels. I am now trying to figure out how to get the stink out of everything I have washed with the last 3 bars I bought. I have bought my last bar of Fels and further will not spend another cent on anything made by Henkel!

Palm Oil Derivatives? Really?!?
I used to use this years ago and am incensed that the formula has changed to include questionable chemicals and, above all, palm oil derivatives. Palm oil is a huge profit generator for multinational corporations, but bad news for our planet, as it destroys rainforests and wildlife habitat. Don't you just love how we are guilt-tripped for global warming while corporations destroy and pollute with impunity? Time to ditch them and use natural products.
